Saving Energy around the Holidays

10 Ways to Save Energy this Season

1. Frosty should describe your Snowman, not your windows! Install insulating window treatments for maximum energy efficiency in your home.

2. Holiday lights don't have to be a holiday fright! Save energy by using energy-saving, solid-state LED holiday lights and strands. They use about 99% less energy than the larger, traditional incandescent bulbs.

3. Limit holiday light displays to six evening hours a day when people can appreciate them.

4.  Baby it's cold outside! But not inside if your house is well-insulated. This can reduce your heating costs by as much as 30 percent! Comfortex can help you start with our wide range of insulating window treatments.

5. Save energy while you're holiday shopping or visiting with friends and family! Use programmable thermostats to automatically lower the temperature 6-8 degrees at night or when no one's home for great savings!

6. Holidays often involve moving furniture to make room for decorations or simply more family members! Be sure to keep furniture from blocking the heat source, which makes your system work harder.

7. Holiday cookies and cakes warm up the season! But don't open the oven more than necessary when cooking, as heat will escape. And when the eggnog starts flowing, don't let the refrigerator door stand open.

8. When you're not gathered around the fireplace, don't forget to close the chimney flue.

9. Tablecloths, placemats, the new holiday sweater: these things get spilled on and you'll find yourself doing more laundry than usual. But remember to use cold water to rinse laundry, and only run the washer with full loads.

10. Hang a shining "Energy Star"! Appliances and electronics with the Energy Star label can cut related home energy bills in each category up to 30%.
